To be a Patagonia volunteer you need to fulfil the requirements detailed below.
If you enjoy horse riding, you will be able to book tours in the areas of Valle Chico and Nahuel Pan in Esquel, and you will also be able to join horseback riding tours in Trevelin, Cholila and Los Alerces National Park.
Language exchange is sharing your mother tongue with a local person who, in turn, helps with Spanish. You meet with your local language exchange partner two or three times per week and half of the time you speak only in Spanish, and the other half only in your mother tongue. Thus, you will both improve your language skills in a real communication context.
Only 5 km from Esquel you will find La Palestra, a 30 metres high natural rock climbing wall which offers challenging climbing in an amazing setting. Naturally, it is recommended to visit the place with a specialized guide. There is also an indoor climbing wall in the Club Andino Esquel. You can also join rock climbing trips through Cholila Explorers.
Usually from mid June to mid October, depending on the amount of snow, you can practice snow sports in La Hoya ski resort.
The ski centre is only 12 kilometres from Esquel and it has one snowpark with 24 trails covering 22 kilometres. You can rent your equipment in Esquel or directly at the ski resort. Find out more at the La Hoya Website.
If you would like to learn tango while you are in Esquel, you will have plenty of opportunities, with experienced teachers. Also, every Sunday evening there is a milonga, for you to practice and enjoy. For further information, visit Tango Esquel.
In Esquel and surrounding areas there are many trails which you can walk to enjoy the nature. You can go to Laguna la Z, Cerro la Cruz, and to the Cañadón de las Palomas in Arroyo Esquel without taking any means of transport. A bit further away, you will find the Curva de los Guanacos trail on the road to La Hoya ski resort. You can also find many trails in the Los Alerces National Park (50 km from Esquel) or in Trevelin (25 Km from Esquel).
The franca whale, also known as Southern right whale, arrives at the waters surrounding the Valdes Peninsula between March and May, and reach their highest number during September and October. You can take a weekend to travel to Puerto Madryn to watch the whales as well as, depending on the time of the year, penguins, seals, sea lions, elephant seals, orcas…
